“If they want us to read and actually like reading, than why don’t they choose books that we find interesting? Or better yet, why don’t they let us choose books that interest us.”
This quote was not stated by some thoughtful philosopher or popular author. No, this is the quote I’ve had the privilege of hearing from all three of my children at different times. Through the years, each one of them has come home at some point or another from a frustrating day at school and asked those two questions. Quite frankly, I actually think they are good questions to ask. Of course, they are questions that I have not yet found good answers for, because when I read through the books in question, I agree. Getting children to WANT to read can be challenging when the books they have to read are low on the interesting meter.
My question for you is, do you keep reading a book, article or blog that doesn’t interest you? I can honestly say that I do not. If a book has not grabbed me by the middle of the third chapter, I rarely read on. If an article has not grabbed me by the headline or second sentence, I do not finish it. Maybe you haven’t even gotten to this sentence in this blog because you are like me. We want to be WOWED immediately to actually dedicate the time it takes to read. So for the sake of pumping up some interest, picture yourself as the STORYTELLER and answer the questions below to know if your story is WRITABLE, READABLE, and SELLABLE:
1. Are others continuously encouraging you to WRITE A BOOK?
2. Are others encouraged by YOUR STORY?
3. Could you PROFIT from your story? In other words, you have an experience or expertise that could encourage, train, educate or make others feel better about themselves AND you could use it to increase profits in your ministry, non-profit or business?
4. Have you read someone else’s story and thought it was similar to yours–and hey, they are SHARING it, gaining a FOLLOWING and EARNING money?
If you answered “YES” to any of the questions above, just maybe you are onto something. Maybe YOU have a STORY that will be WRITABLE, READABLE, and especially SELLABLE. Why not take your experience and share it with others. Your IMPACT could be greater than you ever imagined, and just maybe, your book will be the one that readers WILL find interesting. Your BOOK could leave an imprint on the hearts and minds of readers everywhere. Your book could change the questions above to statements that say:
“They say reading is good for us because we learn, thankfully they gave us this AWESOME book and I already read half of it! Can I read instead of watching TV?”
Will your story be the one that brings that response? It MOST CERTAINLY could, but first you have to WRITE it.
