“Who do you think you are?”
God tells me that I am his creation:
“Your nobody special.”
“What will people think?”
God says we should not be concerned with what people think:
Those three questions kept playing over and over in my head, and they kept me in bondage for years. Because of that bondage, I sat on my God-given talents and was ultimately ignoring the calling God placed in my heart when I was a young teenager to write and share boldly of His great love. I have pulled too many Jonah’s in my day running in the opposite direction of where God wanted me.
When we stay in the shadows, we are ROBBING OTHERS of our God-given talents. We are instead holding back and keeping our gifts, talents, skills and expertise to ourselves. We have allowed the lies of the deceiver to become the master of our lives instead of the VOICE of THE MASTER.
Consider this metaphor: Have you ever seen fishing boats? They are decked out with nets and rods and all kinds of gear because these boats have a very clear mission. A fishing boat’s mission is to catch fish. Why? To feed others. Thus, consider that YOU ARE A FISHING BOAT!
Is it your turn to get out there and do some fishing?
And Jesus said to them,
“Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”
Mark 1:17 (ESV)
Have you done that running in the opposite direction thing and pulled a Jonah?
Have you, like me, been sitting on talents or the seeds of a calling that were placed on your heart years ago?
Have you been playing it safe in the shadows for fear of what others might think?
When my life was fainting away, I remembered the Lord, and my prayer came to you, into your holy temple.
We can create such a stirring of busyness and service that we are shriveling away inside because we are doing whatever we are doing so that other people will ‘see what we are doing.’ They will take notice of us and our ‘servants’ hearts.’ All the while our souls are in shambles because our heart isn’t focused on loving God but on pleasing man.
Boy, am I being bold or what?! Yes I am because I’ve been living with me for a long time, and I’ve spent a good majority of my life in Christian circles with lots of Christian girlfriends.
What I know—is I can’t live that way anymore and neither should any of us who are truly servants of God and followers of Christ. My hope is that we will, like Jonah (not get swallowed by a great fish)—but actually get off our talents and LIFT OFF and GO to where God is leading us and not be so concerned with what ‘they’ will think. (Who are ‘they’ anyway?)
So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord.
Will you join me and step out of the shadows and serve our Lord God unashamedly and unafraid?
“Let me tell you why you are here. You’re here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You’ve lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage. “Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.
