Have you ever thought about whether or not you have been called to ministry or missions? If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, then you HAVE been called; however, because our wonderful Heavenly Father is creative, He has called YOU and ME to different forms of missions and ministries. In this article I share some thoughts on what it looks like to have a MISSION and know ‘THE call.’
Whether we are stay-at-home moms, teachers, bankers, lawyers, doctors, secretaries, nurses, firefighters, military personnel—whatever we do and wherever we are is where God wants us to minister.
Our son, Tyler, spent this summer ministering in Taiwan and China. This has been his third summer on mission in China. He didn’t wake up one day and say, “I want to be a missionary in China!” and go out and buy a ticket. Instead, I’ve seen God working in his heart for years! Ever since he was a wee little boy and wanted to watch Mulan at least twice a day, God has been molding him into the young man God wants him to be.
It just so happened that around Christmas 2013 a missionary was sharing about his work in China during our Sunday service one week. After the missionary spoke and shared a video of their work, our Pastor of Missions announced an opportunity to take a mission trip to China. Tyler and our daughter, Lexi, looked at me right then and there and both mouthed the words “I want to go to China!” I was dumbfounded! My plan was to take a European trip that summer; however, God’s plans were far greater. We cancelled our plans to travel to Europe and the kids set off to China instead—what a life-changing experience for both of them! I’m so thankful that we were in church that particular Sunday and that the Holy Spirit did the work that no parent could ever do. As for the European trip—it was too expensive and, obviously, not where were meant to go that summer.
That trip to China was the continuation for Tyler of what God had been doing in his heart for years. Lexi learned and grew from that trip, but she is not wired the same and doesn’t feel the call to minister to the Asian cultures. And, that’s OKAY because here’s the thing:
God has called each one of us to serve based on how HE CREATED US, and he’s been preparing us for service our whole lives.
The question is, will we follow his calling?
There’s an old hymn that says:
I can hear my Savior calling…Where he leads me, I will follow. Where he leads me, I will follow. Where he leads me I will follow. I’ll go with him; with him all the way. ~Ernest W. Blandy
I have been on a mission of my own that God has led me to, and it consists of writing, speaking, ministering and serving women in various settings. I must admit, it’s more comfortable to be in Christian groups surrounded by like-minded sisters in Christ, but God has brought many opportunities and women to me who are entrepreneurs, in business for themselves or in corporate settings. Many women who I get to work with and interact with are believers but most are not. They don’t have the hope, joy and peace that only a personal relationship with Jesus—the giver of life offers. I find that God has me right where HE wants me to be the LIGHT for these beautiful women who are seeking something more than a career, or a man, or a ‘spiritual experience.’ This is why I started The Center for ELITE Women Communicators because it is through this opportunity that I have a BIG mission field.
Like me, I’m sure that you have had doubts, questions and fears about your own calling—I must admit that Jonah and I have A LOT in common. It’s not all sunshine and roses no matter our life roles, but God has not left us hanging—instead he has given us THE BOOK of all books—His Word. It is our GUIDEBOOK for Life so that when we are faced with the tough decisions, we can find verses like James 1:5-7:
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.
If you are struggling with God’s calling in your life, seek God. Look at your strengths, talents and gifts. See where your “DELIGHT” is because Psalm 37:4 tells us…
Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
For some people, they find it very easy to discern God’s call on their lives. For others, it’s a bit unclear. As James reminds us: “ask in faith, with no doubting.” Keep seeking HIM, resting in HIM, following HIM.
PRAYER REQUEST PLEASE: Tyler will be traveling home this Sunday, August 14 through Monday, August 15. Please pray for his safety—we’ve missed him and are eagerly waiting to see him, welcome him home and hear all about his marvelous adventures in Taiwan and China!
