You may be facing the insurmountable. You may be fighting the biggest battle of your life. You may be overwhelmed by the dailyness of life. Or, you may be enjoying a season of complete happiness and total awesomeness. Wherever you are, you can make the biggest difference in not only your life, but in someone else’s life as well. And that difference, could be something as simple as sharing your story. This article will offer you some ways to prepare to tell your story so that your impact will be broader.
When I first stepped out of my comfort zone to write my first book, become a newspaper columnist and speak, I was recovering from the ravages of having an aggressive form of breast cancer. My hair was finally growing back and my final surgery was behind me. It was time to live again with eyes wide open to the opportunities and possibilities of a new perspective. I was 36-years old and had three small children. Although life was beyond busy, my overwhelming sense of gratitude at having received the gift of a second chance was the catapult to realizing that I had to do something with this gift. I kept being led to the verses from Psalm 119:36-37
Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain. Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word.
In turning my heart toward God’s statutes, I realized that he had given me gifts and one of those gifts was the gift of encouragement. This second chance I had been granted was an opportunity to encourage others to live out loud. To believe in themselves. To reconnect with their heart’s deepest desires and find their calling and mission in life. I realized that…
Touching lives is what it’s all about.
And it was time to get out there with my story, but not just my story, it was God’s story. It also wasn’t just about telling a story, but offering a roadmap and resources to help others who yearn to encourage others, touch lives and share Jesus. Below is how I got started in this speaking, writing, sharing, ministry and touching lives thing that God has led me to:
12 Actions I took to Get Started Writing, Speaking and Sharing
Hired a writing coach and joined a local writer’s group.
Attended a community school writer’s class.
Subscribed to Writer’s Digest.
Attended Christian Writer’s Conferences.
Pitched an idea for a column to my local newspaper and they picked me up as a regular columnist.
From that opportunity, I was asked to speak.
I couldn’t speak, so I found a speaker’s organization and attended their Professional Speaker’s Trainings.
Joined a Toastmasters Group.
I wrote columns, articles and books.
I teach and facilitate writers and speakers classes and workshops.
I made loads of mistakes along the way (that I like to help others avoid!).
Although I learned from the mistakes, I didn’t wallow in them or count them (there may have been a few too many to count!) Instead I continuously reached out to my Heavenly Father (in between throwing a temper tantrum or two). I found myself humbled over and over and over again. And, each day, God is refining me through the power of his Holy Spirit. I’ve been focused on learning from other prayer warriors in Scripture, because their power-filled prayers have offered me hope when I feel hopeless, encouragement when I feel discouraged and continuous reliance on God’s steadfast love and presence.
I am constantly reminded to pray:
“So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong.” I Kings 3:9
“let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants…” Nehemiah 1:6
“Now, our God, hear the prayers and petitions of your servant…”Daniel 9:17
“Yet not as I will, but as you will.” Matthew 26:39
Feeling called goes far beyond a “feeling.” Being called is a recognition that it’s time to get out of the way and let God start moving. Being called is a commitment to taking all of the necessary steps and putting “boots on the ground” for the good work that leads to eternal rewards.
It’s all about recognizing what’s most important.
Then taking action through prayer, commitment and work.
