Here we are again on the verge of counting down, watching the ball drop and singing Auld Lang Syne. Leading up to New Years is a reflective yet hopeful time. It is the occasion for recognizing the ‘days gone by’ and not forgetting them or those people who were a part of our lives in the passing year. It is also a time of anticipation and preparation for what’s to come.
As I write this blog, I am aware of the tragedies that some have experienced this year that makes the conclusion of 2015 one of sadness. Some years end harder than others, and we may find ourselves like our pal, George Bailey, discouraged and in despair because things didn’t happen the way we planned. However, one part we didn’t emphasize last week about the saga of It’s A Wonderful Life was George’s call for help:
“Help me Clarence! Get me back!”
The coming Year is a new beginning. As good as it is to reflect on the old year, it’s best to move forward and anticipate what’s around the bend. When George Bailey came to his senses (with the help of his pal, Clarence) he didn’t list all of the things he was going to do, instead, he begged,
“I want to live again, I want to live again! Please God! Let me live again!”
As you look to the year ahead and think about your resolutions and plans, it’s your opportunity to ‘live again!’ Instead of making a resolution that will be forgotten by the end of January, make a COMMITMENT to God that you will follow HIS plan in 2016. Consider what you will do that is LIVING ALL OUT FOR JESUS in 2016. George Bailey had just ONE goal, and that was to live again! Every day that we are alive is our chance to LIVE AGAIN.
TODAY is a GIFT.
TIME is a GIFT.
MIRACLES are gifts.
Combined, all three gifts offer the gift of a NEW BEGINNING. What will you do with this NEW BEGINNING? God’s gift of HIS SON was a NEW BEGINNING for all of us, and we are grateful that HE provided new life and new beginnings.
A quick exercise to do as you welcome the New Year:
Write down ONE THING that you will COMMIT to this year. Take whatever that commitment is and carry it around with you where you will see it every day! Remind yourself that you have been given gifts galore: a new day, time, miracles and new beginnings. And as you consider what your COMMITMENT will be, seek God’s plan:
Lord, as I reflect on this past year and my life and look forward to the gift of a new beginning in 2016, what would you have me do? I pray that the Holy Spirit would guide my steps and may I surrender my plans for yours today and always. ~Amen
