As we celebrate Independence Day 2019, we are reminded of the great gift we as Americans have been given. Living free and liberated from the constraints placed on us by others is definitely a better way to live. Freedom comes with a steep price, as we all know. In this article I share four insights into what living LIBERATED involves.
LIBERATED from CONTROL
Living LIBERATED from control means facing the reality of a situation. Our Founding Fathers didn’t just decide in an instant – “We want liberty.” They realized the control that England had over them and they didn’t want to live that way. They decided to step into the ring of looking at options and knew they would face uncertainty and opposition. It took years of grueling discussions and agreements, and building a government and then causing an entire revolution. In order to live independently from control, there was a clear course of action that was taken. And, we have our founding fathers and every member of the Congress and the Continental Army to thank for their choice to live united and free. They chose to be LIBERATED from Control.
LIBERATED by the BRAVE
Living LIBERATED requires a BRAVE presence. Last weekend, we spent some time visiting Fort Benning, Georgia where we participated in a ceremony celebrating the conclusion of Basic Training for 200+ young soldiers. As we looked at the young faces of those who have voluntarily joined our Army, it was humbling and frightening to know that they are our “boots on the ground.” Those “boots” have faces and stories and loved ones. Each one of the young men we saw (including our own 19 year-old son) had sworn to honor, defend and protect the Constitution and the lives of Americans. They represent the cost of freedom.
The life-changing nature of choosing this mission will definitely make a lasting imprint on our son’s life. For anyone who has courageously stepped into a military or first responder role, they have sworn to protect their American land and lives of their fellow mankind. Not only will their lives be impacted, but so are all of our lives. We are certainly LIBERATED to live our American lives because of the BRAVE.
LIBERATED by CHOICES
Living LIBERATED requires choices. We are faced with choices all of the time. Sometimes, they are great decisions that work out well. Other times, we may have made a wrong decision that will leave lasting consequences. Either way, we have the FREEDOM to choose, and with this freedom comes responsibility.
Whenever we are faced to take one course or another, there are pros and cons. Our choices often affect others, and will inevitably have a ripple effect.
When we set sail, we decide where we want to go and then plan our course. Sometimes, we choose based on winds and tides. When we do that, we are guaranteed to have a smoother sail. Other times, we are going to a chosen destination regardless of whether the winds and tides are in our favor. There is FREEDOM in our choice – are we motoring or are we finding the wind? We get to choose.
LIBERATED by a PLAN
Living LIBERATED requires a plan. As we know from history, there has been a serious plan from 1776 until present day for the United States to remain free. Living liberated in any aspect of life always requires a plan. We plan our futures, careers, relationships, families, events, homes, vacations, finances, etc…
Ultimately we have been given the opportunity to live free and we get to choose how that looks for each one of us. For me, I’ve chosen to work for myself as an entrepreneur because I wanted more FREEDOM. My life as an entrepreneur has had ebbs and flows and many course corrections along the way, and you know what? I love it. Living FREE certainly comes with a price; yet I wouldn’t want to live any other way.
